Deanie's review of Chloe the Calm and the Bedtime Blues by Julie Anne Penn and Darren Penn

 

"Chloe the Calm and the Bedtime Blues" is a cute story about a little  girl named Miko who has a ballet recital the next day, but she refuses to go to bed. She tells her imaginary superhero friend, Chloe, the reason why she doesn't want to sleep. Chloe thinks she'll miss all of the fun. Also, her friends can stay up late. And most of all, Chloe isn't feeling tired. 

Chloe helps Miko imagine good things and change her attitude about bedtime. Miko learns she could even dream about having a great recital. 

This is a good book for young children because they learn new skills. The illustratons are  bright and lovely. I found the print in the Kindle version hard to read in some places. Other than that, it has good suggestions and there are techniques you can use to help your child feel more positive about bedtime at the end of the book. I recommend it.

Review of Yara and the Yellow-headed Parrots by Yossi Lapid

 

“Yara and the Yellow-Headed Parrots” is a beautiful tale of a little girl named Yara who loves the Rain Forest and all of its inhabitants. Yara loves watching over parrot parents who built the nest for their little ones very carefully. They put it high on the branch of a tree, hoping their two babies would be safe from all dangers there. Yara noticed a young man with a sack lurking around near the parrot nest. She wanted to know about his plans. Clearly, Yara noticed the young man was sad when he told her the baby birds would bring him a good price. He explained he needed the money to pay doctor bills for his child. Yara offered the man a better plan. She knew someone in the forest who had marvelous healing abilities. How did Yara know such a thing? Because the doctor had healed her of the same disease that plagued the young man’s son. I loved the story. The rhymes were perfect and the message was one all children should hear; It’s important to protect the environment. Not only that, but also, there are often better alternatives to any situation that you may not have considered. As in all of Yossi Lapid’s books, the illustrations are extraordinary. I highly recommend this story to children and families.

Children will learn many things from this award-winning tale. The illustrations are soft pastels, that compliment the story well. In the back of the book there are pictures of people in various professions so children and parents can discuss the names of those careers and what is involved in each one.
I highly recommend this book.

Wilbur is back again in this cute little story about the red tractor. He gets a new home and has a surprise when he arrives there. Children will love adorable little Wilbur who is shy and has difficulty meeting new people. Wilbur will teach them to be patient and learn how to adjust to new people and places. The illustrations are colorful and well done and will engage and delight children. They add depth to the story. A lovely sequel to Wilbur’s first book.

Wilbur is a red tractor whose owner, Jim McNab, is his best friend, and this time ‘round Jim joins Wilbur in cutting the grass and Jim informs Wilbur visitors are coming. Wilber is hesitant about meeting this possible new owner, but Jim reassures him, and cleans Wilbur’s tires and washes him and places his blanket over Wilbur for a good night’s rest. The next day a potential buyer for Wilbur arrives and is critical of the ‘too old’ Wilbur, but Jim protects Wilbur’s feelings, and with further support from Hattie the Chicken, Wilbur is prepared for new visitors. Compliments from Susie the squirrel boost Wilbur’s anxiety, until the next visitor, Ben Blake, arrives and is critical of Wilbur’s red color (‘red tractors have bad tempers and they misbehave’), and leaves, again hurting Wilbur’s feelings. Another day, after joyfully working the garden with Jim, and other visitor – Willy and his dog Elliot – and through interactive acts of kindness a friendship is born. The result – Wilber has found a fine new home, greeting Hattie the Chicken and new friends, and finding happiness.

This is a fine story about friendship, about enjoying chores, and about changes that can open doors for new possibilities. Wilbur, the little red tractor, is moving to his new home where a surprise is waiting for him! Though Wilbur is sorry to leave, he is looking forward with hope and anticipation. This second in the "Wilbur the Tractor" series is as fun and entertaining as the first volume and a must for every little child's library. Highly recommended.

This is the second book in the charming Wilbur the Tractor series. Wilbur is a diligent tractor who lives with Farmer Jim. Now that the little red tractor is getting older, Jim worries that mowing the whole farm might be too difficult. So, Jim decides to sell Wilbur. Wilbur worries that a new owner will not be a good friend like Jim.

When prospective buyers come to the barn. Wilbur does not feel comfortable with them. But Jim is a good friend who wants to make sure that his shy, tractor friend will be happy and properly taken care of. Will Wilbur find a new friend and a good fit for his skills? Read this adorable picture book to find out.

Soft crayon pastels portray the mood of the story well. Young readers learn the value of true friendship and empathy for the needs and feelings of others. A beautifully told tale appropriate for primary grade and beginning chapter book readers.

Wilbur's New Home: A Surprise for Wilbur (Wilbur the Tractor) is an adorable story. Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a truly creative author to pull off writing a story about a tractor. This book is a cute sequel to A Tractor Named Wilbur: Friendships Last Forever (Wilbur the Tractor Book 1). Wilbur is a shy red tractor and its owner seeks to find Wilbur a new home. Wilbur is apprehensive about leaving and about who his new owner will be. Hattie the chicken offers support in the move. Recommend for your little's reading.

What a perfect story for pre-schoolers and elementary students. I just love the little red, shy tractor as he expressed his concern to go to the new owner. And what a surprise to find his old friends there.

Wilbur is a red tractor who lives with Farmer Jim. Since Wilber is aging, Farmer Jim feels he should be at a place that requires less work. This leads him to sell Wilbur. Fortunately, Jim is a caring owner who wants to be sure Wilbur finds the perfect new home. Because of his compassion and patience, Wilber finds the perfect owner and meets lots of new friends.

The illustrations are done in soft crayon pastels and compliment the test nicely.

Wilber's New Home is a lovely story about patience, hope, and friendship that would appeal to young children ages 5-8.

What I liked most about this story, is it's an easy read, that brings the little tractor to life with adorable life-like traits, such as bouncing on his tires when he's excited, flashing his headlights and sadly, when tears trickled down his headlights.

This book teaches responsibility and appreciation of owning something like a tractor, with the owner Jim meticulously caring for the tractor each day. Also Wilbur's excellent attitude to trying new jobs; such as raking leaves and plowing snow. The book also teaches children to see the bright side and that changes in life are not always bad. MY RECOMMENDATION:

Charlene the Star is a sweet story for young readers who love horses or animals in general. In the beginning, soon after Charlene is born, she learns that she has been born into a family of racehorses. Of course, her family wants her to follow in their footsteps (literally). However, this is a tough act for her to follow. Charlene soon discovers that being a racehorse just isn’t something she enjoys which causes her to have an identity crisis about what her role in life should be.

One thing Charlene does love is jumping, and that leads her to a major life opportunity. She visits the Jumping for Joy Ranch and is introduced to rail jumping, and she ends up excelling at the sport. In fact, after much practice, she proves to be so good that she wins a first and second place ribbon while participating in a competition.

“Deanie Humphrys-Dunne was blessed with the wonderful gift of telling inspiring stories that encourage children to believe in themselves, work hard and achieve their own unique and special dreams. As we well know from our human experience, it is not easy to be born into a family of super-high-achievers.

What if your child has a disability?

What if your child has a disability? You're probably thinking you feel like the world came crashing in on you. But if you look outside the sun might be shining and the sky is right where it belongs. How do I know about this?  The reason is simple. My parents were told I'd never walk when I was nearly four years old. But he didn't handle it in the average way. He refused to accept that as fact. My dad told me,"Don't pay any attention to what the doctor said. It doesn't make him right. I'm going to teach you to ride and you'll be fine." I totally trusted him so he and I started on our journey together.
I loved riding and my first pony, Little Man. He was a little devil though and much smarter than I. He played a trick on me every chance he got. If you read my true story, Tails of Sweetbrier, you'll find out exactly what Little Man did when he got bored.
I think when you face any type of adversity, the outcome depends on the action you take. What if my dad had taken the doctor's word as the truth? Maybe he'd have babied and coddled me. Worse than that, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to set goals and work toward them. I'd have missed the experience of a lifetime. If you battle any type of adversity, you choose the course of action. In many ways, you may determine the outcome by persevering until you succeed.
I fell of my horse or pony so many times. It seemed I became an expert at falling off and getting up. In our family none of us were allowed to quit. It's a blessing because quitting only assures defeat.
In closing, I'll leave you with the last sentence in my book, "You have the power to make your dreams come true so reach for them and don't accept anything less!"
