Excellent read!

This is a wonderful story about a girl following her dreams! Growing up, Deanie loved to riding horses. It was difficult at first as she was born with cerebral palsy, but her father helped her to become an awesome rider. Deanie began to participate in competition and she became a champion rider! I recommend it to horse lovers everywhere!

Today’s guest author is Reader’s Favorite Book Award-Winner, Deanie Humphrys-Dunne. Deanie is a winner in 2016, 50 Great Writers You Should Be Reading Presented by The Author’s Show.com. She has received several other awards and nominations.

I met Deanie online a few years ago, and we have been author buddies ever since. I hope you have fun learning a little bit more about Deanie through the conversation we had below.  Her book My Life at Sweetbrier is being spotlighted in this interview as it is a true story that I loved.

My Life at Sweetbrier by Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a beautiful, touching true story about a little girl that was diagnosed with a condition Cerebral Palsy and was told by her doctor that she would never be able to walk. Her father would not accept that diagnosis and instills faith in his little girl, and he set out to teach her to ride horses and felt if she could do that, she would be okay. Her parents opened a riding school (Sweetbrier) so that her dad could keep his promise to her. Despite her diagnosis, the family sets out on quite a journey in life…I recommend this book for older aged children for a couple of reasons, because it is a touching story of determination and it teaches a lesson never to give up, and that dreams can come true.

How long have you been writing?

I studied and graduated from 2 courses at the Institute of Children’s Literature before writing my first book, Tails of Sweetbrier. It was published in 2009 but republished in 2017 with a new title, My Life at Sweetbrier, a new cover, and five additional chapters.

Do you like silence or music when you are writing?

I prefer silence because I think it’s easier to concentrate on my writing without distractions.

Is there any one thing that helps the creative juices flow?

No, I’d like to discover one, though.  If I have trouble discovering an idea, I try taking a break from writing. It sometimes helps me gather ideas.

What is your next work in progress?

My sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, is working on the illustrations for our next book. We’re excited about creating our first picture book, about a little tractor named Wilbur. We don’t have a timeframe for the release yet, but I’ll be sure to keep you updated on it.

What would you like readers to remember most about My Life at Sweetbrier?

I think every child deserves to be inspired to follow their dreams because all things are possible if you persevere. You can realize your dreams against the odds like I did.

What's your goal?

Hi everyone,
Do you believe in setting goals? I think it's a good idea because you have something to work toward. But make your goals realistic. Don't write down you want to make a million dollars this week, or lose 10 lbs in a week. You want to set yourself up for success so keep that in mind. You'll build your confidence along the way.
For example, what if you want to lose 5 lbs. in the next 6 weeks? The first thing to do is write it down because you can review it whenever you want and it'll help keep you focused. Are you an author?Write down your goals as an author. Would you like to sell a certain number of books? Write 3 books this year? Remember, add that to your list if it's one of your goals.
As a children's author, I believe every child deserves to be inspired to follow his/ her dreams.My goal is to reach as many children as possible. My books, Tails of Sweetbrier, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star and Hattie's Heroes, and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog, all share valuable life lessons like sharing and helping others.

Anyone have goals for the New Year? I don't usually set them, but this year I"m considering it.
Whatever your goals are, I understand it's important to write them down so you can refer to them. It also makes them more real if you can see them often. Whatever your goals are, I hope you reach them.

What if your child has a disability?

What if your child has a disability? You're probably thinking you feel like the world came crashing in on you. But if you look outside the sun might be shining and the sky is right where it belongs. How do I know about this?  The reason is simple. My parents were told I'd never walk when I was nearly four years old. But he didn't handle it in the average way. He refused to accept that as fact. My dad told me,"Don't pay any attention to what the doctor said. It doesn't make him right. I'm going to teach you to ride and you'll be fine." I totally trusted him so he and I started on our journey together.
I loved riding and my first pony, Little Man. He was a little devil though and much smarter than I. He played a trick on me every chance he got. If you read my true story, Tails of Sweetbrier, you'll find out exactly what Little Man did when he got bored.
I think when you face any type of adversity, the outcome depends on the action you take. What if my dad had taken the doctor's word as the truth? Maybe he'd have babied and coddled me. Worse than that, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to set goals and work toward them. I'd have missed the experience of a lifetime. If you battle any type of adversity, you choose the course of action. In many ways, you may determine the outcome by persevering until you succeed.
I fell of my horse or pony so many times. It seemed I became an expert at falling off and getting up. In our family none of us were allowed to quit. It's a blessing because quitting only assures defeat.
In closing, I'll leave you with the last sentence in my book, "You have the power to make your dreams come true so reach for them and don't accept anything less!"
