An interview with Hattie the chicken

Today we're going to interview one of the characters from Charlene the Star and Hattie's Heroes, a children's book told by the animal characters.

"Good morning Hattie, please tell us some of your favorite things to do.
"Hello, I'm hopping around flapping my wings because I'm excited about talking to you today.
I love wearing pretty bonnets, like the polka dot one I'm wearing on the cover of Charlene the Star and Hattie's Heroes. But another thing I enjoy is helping my animal friends do good things. For example, in the story, Wooliam the sheep raises money for charity with his lemonade stand and other things he does. All of my friends were thrilled to organize our fair to help raise money. In fact, I love organizing parties and special events.
How wonderful Hattie. You and your friends are a great team.
Tell us about your friend, Elliott.
I love Elliott. He's a handsome dog with big brown spots and an over sized head. He loves giving his animal friends confidence to try new things. He shows a lot of wisdom because he doesn't get upset when unexpected things happen. Instead, he takes action to help solve problems. Elliott and I worked together to solve a big problem we had regarding writing a schedule for our clients' training. We'll show you the picture at the bottom of this interview.
Thank you so much for sharing the picture, Hattie. who drew the beautiful picture and the cover for your book?
Holly Humphrys-Bajaj drew the cover and all of the illustrations in the book. Aren't they fantastic?
Holly is so talented. We love how her drawings show our personalities. It's a busy day for me today, so I need to get to work, but thank you for interviewing me today.
It's been my pleasure, Hattie. Thank you so much for answering the questions."

What's your goal?

Hi everyone,
Do you believe in setting goals? I think it's a good idea because you have something to work toward. But make your goals realistic. Don't write down you want to make a million dollars this week, or lose 10 lbs in a week. You want to set yourself up for success so keep that in mind. You'll build your confidence along the way.
For example, what if you want to lose 5 lbs. in the next 6 weeks? The first thing to do is write it down because you can review it whenever you want and it'll help keep you focused. Are you an author?Write down your goals as an author. Would you like to sell a certain number of books? Write 3 books this year? Remember, add that to your list if it's one of your goals.
As a children's author, I believe every child deserves to be inspired to follow his/ her dreams. My goal is to reach as many children as possible. My books, Tails of Sweetbrier, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star and Hattie's Heroes, and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog, all share valuable life lessons like sharing and helping others.
What are your goals for this year?

Animal stories for kids: Faith

What if you write animal stories for kids? Have you ever written one about the faith of one little girl? I bet you’ll love the story of little Breanna Carsey. Her true story is absolutely amazing in so many ways.
Everyone has dreams and Breanna is no exception. She was eight years old when she announced she wanted her parents to buy her a “mommy horse,” or a brood mare. At first, Breanna’s parents planned to tell  her this dream was just not going to happen. Why? The family didn’t have a farm and they had a very limited budget for a horse. The maximum amount they could spend was $2,000. Of course, Breanna’s baby horse would have to be trained as well. It would be another expensive detail.
Breanna’s Dad, Steve, admits “She has Daddy wrapped around her little finger.” Eventually he agreed to go to an auction for a look around. Most of the horses were too expensive, but Breanna had looked at the sales catalog. She asked her Dad to check out a horse called  “Image of a Sweet Girl.” Did Breanna have a reason? Indeed she did.  She said, “Daddy, I want to grow up to be a sweet girl so this is the perfect match.” Image of A Sweet Girl” would be having a foal, but no one expected the baby horse to be anything extraordinary. She’d already had 4 foals and none of them had a good racing record. But what did Breanna say? “Daddy, you got to have faith.” She named the little foal “MJB Got Faith.”
Where did she get the name.  The initals M was her sister, MacKenzie , J for her brother, Jordan, and B for her name.
Breanna “loved him and played with” the new baby horse, even in the wee hours of the morning. She insisted her horse was “something special.” When MJB Got Faith started his training, everyone agreed he didn’t seem very fast. He was a trotting horse. When he entered his first race only Breanna expected her horse to win.  Not only did Breanna’s horse win his first race, but his second, third and fourth one as well. Those wins qualified him for the Ohio State Championship Trotting race. Again, he wasn’t favored to win but Breanna believed he would beat the more experienced group of horses. Breanna’s Dad said,”Baby, if he gets third place you gotta be so grateful.”  Breanna said, ” Daddy, I am grateful, but he’s going to win. You got to have faith.” Guess what?  He won! Breanna took part of the winnings and donated it to charity. She saved the rest  for the day when she can buy a farm where MJB Got Faith could relax. She’s dreaming of the day when she can walk out the door and play with the horse she loves.

Kid's books: Spirit and bravery

When you read or create kid’s books do you remember acts of bravery? Don’t you think brave characters are heroes to many of us? I agree with that. Real stories of bravery and spirit are even more remarkable. Let’s consider the story of little Safy’re Terry. She’s an amazing child whose family died in a fire set by an arsonist. She is now being raised by her aunt. Safy’re’s dad, and three young siblings all perished in the fire. Safy’re suffered horrible burns on her face, arms and legs. She has endured many surgeries and infections. Do you know what Safy’re wanted most for Christmas? She asked for enough Christmas cards to fill the stand that her Aunt bought. Her Aunt said, “Don’t get your hopes up, honey because we only get about ten cards a year.” But not this year. The story reached social media and television.  She has received hundreds of thousands of cards. Safy’re nearly cries when she sees the mail truck pull up to her house with thousands of cards, specially for her. Her family says:
“She smiles. She plays with her friends. She runs around laughing and joking like any other kid her age. She gets excited about Santa Claus. When a TV reporter puts a microphone under her chin, she enthusiastically, politely, shyly answers their questions. And when the mail truck pulls up with Christmas cards for her special tree, she turns to her aunt and beseeches her not to cry.
People from around the world have responded to Safy’re with overwhelming generosity, sending her not only Christmas cards, but gifts and money and special messages.” Even celebrities have sent gifts.
“Through her courage, she reminds us that there are other children who have experienced tragedies, other kids who live in poverty and in situations they didn’t create and don’t deserve, and who struggle to make their way. She reminds us there are many other people, adults and children, who need the spirit and generosity she’s awakened in us to help lift them from their circumstances, even if just for a special day.”
You can see what a remarkable, courageous, child Safy’re is. She has met every challenge with bravery. People around the world have supported her and tried to lift her spirits. She is the perfect example of grace and bravery.
Several of my kid’s books put generosity and caring for others in the spotlight. The first of my kid’s books, Tails of Sweetbrier, is about beating the odds and living your dream. Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes highlights teamwork and helping others. Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog, shows bullies can change, and shows the value of friendship.
Safy’re, I hope your dreams come true. If anyone in the world deserves them, you do. People everywhere admire your amazing courage in such difficult circumstances. Merry Christmas!

An interview with Bentley Bulldog

"Good morning, Bentley, it's so nice to be chatting with you this morning."
"Thank you, Deanie, I'm pleased to be here." Can we please get right to the questions, I have a busy day."
"Sure Bentley, we'll get right on that."

Please tell everyone something about your story, Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog.
I kind of accidentally met Charlene the Star and her animal friends while I was looking for adventure myself. Charlene the Star is a pretty red horse who loves jumping. Boy, I can't believe those big jumps she sails right over! She's amazing. Charlene has big dreams. She wanted to win a special award for jumpers. But I can't spoil the fun and tell you too much. I made other friends too, like Hattie the Chicken and Elliott, the dog with the big head.
Did you like Hattie when you first met her?
Uh, oh, do we have to talk about THAT?
I'm afraid we do, Bentley. Readers like to know those things. It's  okay, you don't have to cover your face because you're embarrassed, Bentley.
Hattie loves hats, so I decided to tease her.
Well, I wasn't nice at all. In fact, here's wh
at I said to poor little Hattie:
"I"m Bentley. It's silly to see a chicken wearing a bonnet! Chickens can't do anything. Have you ever heard of anyone talking about a chicken's outstanding skills? No! No one even talks about them unless they're on the dinner menu."
How rude! You were quite a bully, weren't you, Bentley?
I was quite obnoxious. Hattie asked me if I was a "professional bully." I practiced enough so I could have been, but nobody ever paid me for it. But I managed to learn a lot, amazingly.
Tell us about Elliott
Ah, Elliott's a nice dog. He has big brindle spots and an over sized head. He helps other animals with self-esteem and confidence. He's quite gentle and caring, actually. He enjoys helping his animal friends.
What happened to Hattie when she heard about the headline in "The Gazette?"
Oh, my, she nearly fainted. I had to help her to her chair. By then, I'd started to realize being a bully wasn't a great idea. The headline said:"Depression Spreading Among Chickens!" Hattie was so worried about her friends she made a plan to help them. We all thought we should do something to cheer up her friends so we planned a special event. You'll be surprised what happens at the end. Even Hattie's astonished!
How sweet!
"I need to be running along now. I promised to help Elliott with a little project."
"Thanks for spending time with me today, Bentley. It was fun talking about your book.
"You're welcome, Deanie. I had fun as well."

An Interview with Deanie Humphyr

Today, we’re chatting with Deanie Humphrys-Dunne about her newest book, Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog. Hi, Deanie! Welcome to The Bumpy Road To Writing For Children. Pull up a chair, get a cup of coffee, and let’s chat for a while.

“Thank you so much for inviting me to chat with you this morning, Deb! I love spending time with you and I hope your readers will enjoy learning more about my new book, Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog.” I have to mention you were so thoughtful to let me have my coffee, Deb. I don’t think I could function too well without it!  Now we’ll get on with the questions."

Will you tell us about Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog?
Well, Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog is an entertaining story. Charlene the Star is a beautiful red horse, who specializes in jumping. This time she sets a big goal for herself. She wants to win the High Score Award. That would mean she’d be the best jumper in the whole state of Kentucky! Early in the story we meet Bentley bulldog. He’s really an obnoxious little fellow at first. He insults adorable little Hattie the Chicken by telling her that “Nobody even talks about chickens unless they’re on the menu!”  Hattie is so cute. She loves to wear pretty bonnets. But Hattie gets very upset when she sees the headline in The Gazette. She plans something special to cheer up her friends. The story has lots of adventures and the animals are amusing.

Why do you write books with life lessons in them?
I love writing books that share life lessons because I think the lessons could help children to have happier lives with healthy self esteem. I don’t preach at the readers. The lessons are placed in the story so readers have something to ponder about. These days, I think parents are very busy and they may not have time to talk about good behavior with their children, so my books have valuable things to share.

What got you interested in writing for children?
I love children and I think it’s easy to relate to them. I studied with The Institute for Children’s Literature for a few years (2 courses). But I didn’t have the confidence to publish my first book until 2009, when I wrote my award-winning autobiography, Tails of Sweetbrier. At the time, I took a course in medical coding, but couldn’t find a job, so I was discouraged. But I had a strong intuition to write the story of my childhood. My parents always encouraged me and I listened to my inner feelings and pursued publishing my book. My Dad told us that when we weren’t sure about something, we should consider the worst that could happen. In this case, it would have been that no one wanted to publish my book so I figured I could deal with that if necessary. But now the book has won awards so I’m glad we took the first step. This book will show you that anything is possible.

In the book, there are several life lessons. Can you tell us about them?
Well, this book deals with bullying because Bentley was a bully in the beginning so we offer ways to deal with that. But we also stress things like sharing and helping others. Readers will see that it’s possible for someone to change, once they realize they’re not on the right path. Readers will also notice that it’s important to set goals and do your best and develop their natural talents.

Why do you have animals teach the lessons? I’ve noticed there are very few humans in the story.

I know children love animals and I think it’s more fun for them to read about animals who are the main characters. Besides, we can imagine what the animals are thinking and it’s amusing to do that. I think the animals make the story unique.

Do you have any more books published?
Yes, actually Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog is my fifth book. The others are, Tails of Sweetbrier, which I mentioned, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star, Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes, and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog.

What ages are your books aimed at?

That’s a difficult question because children can have various reading abilities at different ages. Some are more advanced than others. I would say generally that they would be appropriate for 6-13. Tails of Sweetbrier would probably be the most advanced of the books, so perhaps it would be most suited for 8 years and up.

Do you outline your books or are you a panster?
Definitely a panster, Deb. I just start writing and keep editing as I go along. I change many things along the way.

The illustrations are great. Who is your illustrator?

I agree, they are amazing!  My sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, illustrates our books and designs the covers. She’s an incredible talent. She really brings the characters to life an captures their personalities.

Do you have any other books in progress right now?
Yes, I do, I’m working on a story that’s partially based on fact, but it’s still in the beginning stages.

What are the links so that we can learn about your books?
Amazon

Barnes and Noble

Website
Blogs

Will you tell us where we can buy your books?
My books are available on Amazon.com in both print and Kindle formats, Barnes and Noble.com, my
website, ColdCoffeePress, and Indie Diaries. People can also order signed copies from me by emailing:deanie@dhdunne.tk.

Thank you so much for speaking with me today, Deb. I truly enjoyed our time together.

An Interview with Hattie the Chicken!

“Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Hattie the Chicken, one of the stars of Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog. Hattie, I’m so excited that you’re my guest today.”
“Why, thank you, Deanie. I’m thrilled to be here. You can tell because I can’t sit still. I’m hopping around, flapping my wings.”
“Hattie, you’re making me laugh.” We need to get down to the questions now.”
  • Hattie, how did you get your name?

“Oh, I’m so happy you started with an easy question so I wouldn’t be nervous.
My Mama said when I was born there was a piece of shell stuck on my head. it looked like a hat so she thought I’d like wearing hats. She decided Hattie was the perfect name for me.
  • How many books have you starred in?
My first book was Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes. Oh,that story was fun.
My friends loved my talents. Wooliam, the sheep, Elliott the dog, and all of our other friends helped show me that I was a really good organizer. I have such good beakmanship (I write with my beak, you know) that I wrote a cute ad for theGazette when we  started our own business. We had a great time and we helped so many horses overcome their problems. Tiger Lily was afraid of EVERYTHING when she started her training. But she was so talented. We had to build her confidence. Elliott helped a lot with that. Oh my, I’m talking so much I have to take a rest. Oh, I almost forgot to mention the gorgeous red horse, Charlene the Star. She’s such a
talented jumper.
What do you like to do?
Oh, that’s a good question! After I finish hopping around I’ll be able to answer. Ah, that’s better. Now I can tell you that I LOVE  to wear pretty bonnets. I make them myself. Now I have so many colors! I even have a blue one with bright yellow polka dots! Other than wearing my beautiful hats, I like to plan events, like fairs. it’s so
much fun.
You mentioned Wooliam. Tell us about him.
Wooliam is a super-friendly Suffolk sheep. He told us that all of his relatives have black faces and black legs, just like him. Wooliam did something special for Charlene the Star. But I can’t tell you everything about the story.
Tell us about your new book, Charlene the  Star and Bentley Bulldog.
Well, you probably guessed that Bentley is one of the stars. He was absolutely obnoxious when we first met. My goodness, my soft red feathers are getting ruffled just thinking of him. But eventually he does quite a few good things. You’d be surprised. Here’s a picture of him escorting me across the street. He was wearing his crossing guard jacket to keep me safe. We made a plan because my friends were feeling very sad and we had to do something to cheer them up. Our plan worked out perfectly. Charlene also had some new experiences. It was so exciting.
What do you think children will remember about your books?
They’ll remember how much fun it is to read them. They’ll learn about sharing, helping others, teamwork, setting goals and working hard, just to mention a few things. They’ll love the covers and beautiful illustrations by Holly Humphrys-Bajaj! They’re remarkable.
Well, Hattie, it’s nearly time for your lunch, so I think we’ll have time for one more question. Where can people buy your books.
Our books are on http://www.Amazon.com and http://www.barnes and Noble.com. If people want signed copies, they could email you at: deanie@dhdunne.tk. And everyone would like to know that our books are on Kindle, too. If anyone wants to find out more, they should visit your website:

Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog- New Release- blog by Lily Eva Blake

Charlene the Star and Bentley the Bulldog Book Release – Deanie Humphrys-Dunne

Hey to all my blogger friends! Hope the week has been a good one for everyone. Most of you that know me, know that I don’t normally post book releases for children’s books nor do I review them. I remember saying a while back that I was going to ‘expand my horizons’ and read all kinds of genre. Just because I don’t have grandchildren yet, I do have young nieces and nephews.
There’s something else, too. When I started blogging early in 2013, I ‘met’ Deanie Humphrys-Dunne through my blog. Anyone that’s been with me through the beginning knows that I’ve had my ups and downs personally and medically. Deanie always took time to check on me, to see how I was doing.
Deanie herself overcame physical challenges at a very young age. I can’t help but applaud her for that. It was the basis of her first book of a series called Tails of Sweetbrier. Charlene the Star and Bentley the Bulldog was just released on December 29, 2014 and is part of the Tails of Sweetbrier series. At the end of this post, Deanie’s bio will list the other books she’s written. I’d also recommend you visit Deanie’s website and find out a little about her yourself. Her story and mission is inspiring.
BentleyCoverFrom the book:

Charlene the Star makes new friends in this exciting adventure. She wants to win a special award for jumpers. She must learn important things if she wants to reach her goal. Does she succeed? How does Hattie react when she sees the headline in The Gazette? Why is Cherish so afraid? Your child will be fascinated with the amusing adventures of Charlene and her friends. Children will be entertained and learn important life lessons.

Here’s an excerpt:
“I’m Bentley. It’s silly to see a chicken wearing a bonnet!” Bentley said, laughing loudly. “Chickens can’t do anything. Have you ever heard of anyone talking about a chicken’s outstanding skills? No! Nobody even mentions them unless they’re on the dinner menu.”
“Excuse me, but chickens, with or without bonnets, deserve respect,” Hattie answered. “You have no reason to laugh at me. Yes, I do have abilities! For example, I’m a good organizer with neat beakmanship. (It’s like handwriting.) My beakmanship helped us win the ‘Coaches of the Year Award.’
Deanie Humphrys-Dunne is a children’s book author with five books published at this time: Award-winning autobiography, Tails of Sweetbrier, Charlie the Horse, Charlene the Star, Charlene the Star and Hattie’s Heroes and Charlene the Star and Bentley Bulldog. All of her books offer positive messages for children. Her sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, beautifully illustrates her books. Deanie has been featured on several author websites and been interviewed on Theauthorshow.com.
I’ll be reviewing this one soon, so stay tuned! Until next post, have a great day.
