Review for Novo Space Robot: How to Shrink the Doubt Monsters by Charly Froh

Novolino, or Novo, for short is a  space robot. In the beginning of the story he explains what happened when "Doubt Monsters" came. They spoiled everything for Novo and his friends because they planted ideas that  discouraged fun, adventures, and curiosity. But Novo escaped the monsters and went to Earth. He noticed children on Earth took action when they doubted their abilites. They tried to accomplish things, even if they were afraid and it built confidence. The Earthlings even welcomed the doubting monsters and helped them learn about believing in themselves.  This book has bright, endearing illustrations. I thought the print was difficult to read in parts of the Kindle version. But the story is well-written and I feel that young children will enjoy it and learn from it.

My Review of Ethan and Mia's Miracle Island by Karin Aaron and Danny Friedman

"Ethan and Mia's Miracle Island" is a cute tale about siblings who are bored when their mom is working and can't play with them. Mia decices they should use their imaginations and pretend they are on a pirate shiip.

Ethan agrees to participate, but he complains about feeling bored. In the end, their mom has a surprise for them.

The illustrations are bright and engaging. I think toddlers and young children will enjoy the story. It encourages younsters to use their imaginations. There is also an extra activity at the end of the book.Recommended for primary grade children.

My Review of the Candy Cane Fiasco by Rachel Hilz

“The Candy Cane Fiasco” is a cute, amusing tale of a little girl who gets a candy cane from Grandma and that starts a chain of sticky catastrophies. When the little girl eats the candy cane, it creates a sticky mess. A cat, a Chiristmas Tree, and even, Santa get stuck together. The illustrations are engaging and entertaining. At first, grandma doesnn’t have a solution to the situation. She thinks Santa can help when he comes on Christmas Eve.But he arrives and has no idea what to do. In fact, he gets stuck as well. And in the end, everyone in the family gets a special surprise, courtesy of Santa himself. I believe very young children will enjoy this silly tale.
I would have enjoyed it even more if everyone in the famly had names and each of them helped solve the problem.

My Review of The Naughty Sheep by Diana Aleksandrova

"The Naughty Sheep" is funny, cute book for young chldren. It's a good bedtime story. The illustrations are adorabel and comical. No doubt children will be laughing from beginning to the end of the story. My favorite illustratons are the ones with the sheep leaping around in her tutu. Other illustrations show the sheep singing and spinning a top. I feel that children and parents will love this story and want to enjoy it over and over again. I would have preferred that the little boy fell asleep at the end, and/or that the naughty sheep had answered the questions the little boy asked at the end of the story as well. But, it's an adorable tale that I recommend.

Review of Chickens Don't Live in Tree Houses by Laura Willigham

"Chickens Don't Live in Tree Houses" is a cute story with examples of creativitiy and helping others. Lily, a young chicken, decides to make a plan for her family and others while they are having extended rainstorms. Lily and her family live on a hilltop so Lily's Dad thinks they will be safe. But their friends who live in low-lying areas may not be so lucky. Lily's parents decided to invite friends to stay with them. Lily has a great imagination so she plans to convert their tree house into a house she and her family can live in, while the guests can enjoy the family home.

What does Lily do to prepare? She makes curtanis for the windows. She cleaned the floors and brought blankets and pillows from the house.  She was quite thorough with her preparations.

Lily's plan worked well. I would have liked to see more engagement between Lily's family and their guests and perhaps a more colorful cover showing the chickens inside the tree house. Chicke But the story shares cute illustrations and lessons on helping others, being creative and thoughtful, and showing that home is where the heart is. These are all fine lessons for children to learn.

Review of Chickie and the Great Barnyard Benefit by Bee Urabazo

Chickie and the Great Barnyard Benefit is an adorable tale you won’t want to miss. When a baby chick named Chickie finds a home on Stagecoach Lane, he meets some new animal friends.  Chickie’s friends suffer during a big storm so they plan a benefit show to help the victims. What happens when nasty Derek Lambcelot acts like he’s the only one who has talent? What if the talent show is a failure? Chickie wants to perform in the show, but will he be laughed off the stage?

I loved the story itself and the beautiful ending. The illustrations were beautiful and there is plenty of suspense throughout the book.

This is a wonderful tale for parents and families. Children will adore it and they will benefit from learning about developing your talents, coping with varied personalities, and overcoming obstacles. I give it my highest recommendation.

An Interview with Jim and Wilbur the Tractor

"Top o' the mornin' to you, Wilbur," said Jim, entering Wilbur's garage.  Today we're going to talk about your books."

"Hooray," said the little red tractor, bouncing all four tires. "

"I've owned you for more than five years. Tell everyone about your favorite jobs.

"Oh, most of all, I love helping you Jim. You're my best friend. But some of my favorite jobs are helping you mow the grass in the spring and summer. But that doesn't mean I rest all winter. Pushing the snow into neat little piles is so much fun. Sometimes I even pull the little cart so you can take weeds out of the garden."

"That's right, Wilbur. You do all of those jobs so well. We make a good team."

"What else happens in your first book, Wilbur?"

"I feel sad when you tell me you need a new tractor because it would be too hard for me to mow the big field where your new vegetable garden is. I thought I'd never see you again. Big tears rolled down my headlights. But you showed me there can be good things about changes. I might even make new animal friends. It was a great thing to know and I found out we will always be friends."

"That's right, Wilbur."

What happens in your second book, Wilbur's new Home?

"Different people come to see me. Some of them were grumpy and unkind, but you told me we'd find the perfect new family for me. One of the people I was too old. I ran and hid from him. Another man said he didn't like red tractors because they had bad tempers. That made me sad, but you and Hattie the Chicken told me I had to be patient and the right person would come. Our story has a happy ending."

"Yes, it does. We are both happy you found the perfect new family. And they even prepared a special surprise for you in your new home."

"Finally, could you tell everyone about the dedication of your books?"

Sure, Jim. My first book, A Tractor Named Wilbur, is dedicated to  all of the children who read my book. And the second book, Wilbur's new Home is dedicated to all of the children who are shy about making new friends. I love making new friends and I hope all of the children enjoy my books."

"Thank you for telling everyone about your new stories, Wilbur. I loved our interview. I'll see you soon."

A cute Little Story! Review by Janice Spina

Wilbur is back again in this cute little story about the red tractor. He gets a new home and has a surprise when he arrives there. Children will love adorable little Wilbur who is shy and has difficulty meeting new people. Wilbur will teach them to be patient and learn how to adjust to new people and places. The illustrations are colorful and well done and will engage and delight children. They add depth to the story. A lovely sequel to Wilbur’s first book.

Award winning Connecticut children’s book author Deanie Humphrys-Dunne writes enchanting stories that not only entertain youngsters and share insights into developmental life lessons, but by placing the stories with animal (and mechanical!) characters, the stories become more accessible for learning. This book WILBUR’S NEW HOME is enhanced by the superb illustrations of Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, Deanie’s talented sister, and Wanda L Urabazo and is a very welcome Book 2 in the WILBUR THE TRACTOR series.

Wilbur is a red tractor whose owner, Jim McNab, is his best friend, and this time ‘round Jim joins Wilbur in cutting the grass and Jim informs Wilbur visitors are coming. Wilber is hesitant about meeting this possible new owner, but Jim reassures him, and cleans Wilbur’s tires and washes him and places his blanket over Wilbur for a good night’s rest. The next day a potential buyer for Wilbur arrives and is critical of the ‘too old’ Wilbur, but Jim protects Wilbur’s feelings, and with further support from Hattie the Chicken, Wilbur is prepared for new visitors. Compliments from Susie the squirrel boost Wilbur’s anxiety, until the next visitor, Ben Blake, arrives and is critical of Wilbur’s red color (‘red tractors have bad tempers and they misbehave’), and leaves, again hurting Wilbur’s feelings. Another day, after joyfully working the garden with Jim, and other visitor – Willy and his dog Elliot – and through interactive acts of kindness a friendship is born. The result – Wilber has found a fine new home, greeting Hattie the Chicken and new friends, and finding happiness.

This is a fine story about friendship, about enjoying chores, and about changes that can open doors for new possibilities. Children (and their reading parents!) will have fun while learning important life lessons. And…there is a little quiz at book’s end to underline new knowledge. Recommended. Grady Harp, December 21

A New Best Friend (5 stars) review by Barbara A Mojica
This is the second book in the charming Wilbur the Tractor series. Wilbur is a diligent tractor who lives with Farmer Jim. Now that the little red tractor is getting older, Jim worries that mowing the whole farm might be too difficult. So, Jim decides to sell Wilbur. Wilbur worries that a new owner will not be a good friend like Jim.

When prospective buyers come to the barn. Wilbur does not feel comfortable with them. But Jim is a good friend who wants to make sure that his shy, tractor friend will be happy and properly taken care of. Will Wilbur find a new friend and a good fit for his skills? Read this adorable picture book to find out.

Soft crayon pastels portray the mood of the story well. Young readers learn the value of true friendship and empathy for the needs and feelings of others. A beautifully told tale appropriate for primary grade and beginning chapter book readers.

A Tractor Named Wilbur featured on Reader's Magnet!

I appreciate the opportunity to discuss my first picture book, A Tractor Named Wilbur- Friendships Last Forever today. It is the winner of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Gold Medal.  Thank you, Author’s Lounge, for the invitation to introduce Wilbur’s story to your audience.

Wilbur is a cheerful little red tractor who loved helping his friend Jim. Wilbur has known Jim for five years. In the morning, Jim would typically open the barn door and say, “Top o’ the mornin’ to you, Wilbur.” In the summer Wilbur loved mowing the grass for Jim. He cut every blade of grass perfectly. Jim appreciated Wilbur’s efforts. He proved that by taking very good care of him. For example, when Wilbur’s tires were muddy, Jim hosed them off and dried them with a towel. Jim had a tool box with Wilbur’s name on it. He even covered Wilbur with a fluffy green blanket when the weather was chilly.

Although Wilbur loved cutting the grass for Jim, he wanted more things to do. Wilbur asked Jim if there were other tasks he could learn. The little red tractor was thrilled to wear chains on his tires in the winter to help keep him from slipping while he pushed the snow into neat piles. Before long, Wilbur pulled a small cart so Jim could carry gardening tools and weeds from the flower beds. He loved his life with Jim, but things were about to change.

One morning Jim opened the barn door. He didn’t say, “Top o’ the mornin’ to you Wilbur.” Of course, Wilbur noticed something was bothering Jim. He said, “Jim, you look sad. What’s wrong?”

Jim explained he wanted to buy the lot across the street so he could have his own vegetable garden. Wilbur answered, “That’s exciting. Why are you sad?”

Jim whispered, “Wilbur, you’re getting o-l-d-e-r.” He told his little tractor that he would feel very sad if Wilbur got hurt while mowing that big field. Jim felt he needed a new tractor.

When he heard the news, Wilbur’s body shook and tears cascaded down his headlights. Wilbur stomped his tires, insisting he didn’t want to leave.

The next day, Jim came into the barn to visit Wilbur. He washed Wilbur’s headlights with warm soapy water. He patted the little tractor and reassured him that he would find a new home for Wilbur with someone who loved him.

"Button goes to the Doctor" is a cute story for preschool children, or early readers. When Button, the adorable puppy, visits the doctor he walks through the woods with his friend, who reminds him to bring his raincoat. She also tells Button to be careful when they cross the street on the way to Dr. Pig's office. Dr. Pig is very welcoming and cheerful. "

Endorsement:
This is a lovely story about a tractor called Wilbur, that should appeal to both young boys and girls with not only an adorable red tractor, but also Susie squirrel and Hattie the chicken.
What I liked most about this story, is it's an easy read, that brings the little tractor to life with adorable life-like traits, such as bouncing on his tires when he's excited, flashing his headlights and sadly, when tears trickled down his headlights.
This book teaches responsibility and appreciation of owning something like a tractor, with the owner Jim meticulously caring for the tractor each day. Also Wilbur's excellent attitude to trying new jobs; such as raking leaves and plowing snow. The book also teaches children to see the bright side and that changes in life are not always bad. A lovely tale, that will capture children's imagination and I am sure will become a night-time favourite. “ ~ Hollie Anne Marsh, children’s author

This is a wonderful story about a man and the tractor he loves with all his heart. They work together day in and day out, happy to be in each other’s company.

But then, the unimaginable happens: life changes. The man decides to buy more property. It’s more land than he can “work” with his little tractor, and so, the man is forced to find a new home for his friend.

Yes, in ways it’s sad. But it does teach us—and our children—that life brings many changes, and we must try to ensure that when these changes occur, everyone is taken care of.

Wilbur is distraught. He loves Jim and doesn’t want to move. Will Jim and Wilbur find a way to work things out and still be friends?
This picture book contains soft, colorful illustrations and charming dialogue. Children will learn that sometimes they must change and adapt to new situations. The book contains questions for readers to discuss with parents or teachers to maximize the lessons of the tale. Recommended to preschool and elementary school childrenWilbur is an Endearing Little Tractor that children will love!

This is a sweet story about a cute little tractor named Wilbur. Wilbur loves working for his owner, Jim, and always does his best for him. One day things change and Wilbur has to leave his home and move to another owner when Jim buys a larger farm that will be too much for the little tractor to handle. Will Wilbur be happy with a new owner?

Children will enjoy this little story about Wilbur and learn a valuable lesson about changes in their lives. Things don’t stay the same forever. They will love the colorful and sweet illustrations and dialogue that perfectly go together.

Just awesome I am going to buy this book. The picture are just great. What neat story Can't wait for book 2.

I was given a free copy of the book by the author for a an honest review.

What a sweet story about a tractor names Wilbur. He loves to work for his owner Jim, and strives to do his best, was he does. Cutting grass in Jim's yard, pulling the trailer, ploughing snow.
But one day it all changes. Jim wants to buy another property and Wilbur would be too small for doing the task there, and he was getting old.
Wilbur is very sad and his tears run down. Jim tries to easy him and put a blanked on him.
The story shows, that changes can come any time and one has to be prepared for it.
A wonderful story for boys and girls. They would love the story and the wonderful drawings of Wilbur.

An interview with Children's author, Deb Hockenberry!

"Today we're welcoming children's author, Deb Hockenberry. Thank you for joining me today, Deb. It's a pleasure to talk with you about your adorable new picture book, "Where Can We Have A Party."
Let's get right to the questions so people can find out more about your book.

Bio

Deb has always wanted to write stories for children since she was a kid herself. She has taken two courses from The Institute of Children’s Literature and is a member of the online and ongoing children’s workshop, The CBI Workshop. She also won first honorable mention in the Jory Sherman Short Story Awards!

In her spare time, Deb loves to crochet, knit, and just like you, she loves to go to parties!
Deb, Where Can We Have The Party? Is your first book. Tell us about it.
Hi, Deanie! Thanks so much for having me on your blog today. ‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ has been in the making for a long time. I got the idea back when I was in elementary school and it’s gone through so many transformations through the years.

The story is a very simple concept. Giraffe wants to have a party for his friend Chimpanzee. He can’t think of a place to have the party so he asks three of his other friends for ideas. Every idea they come up with won’t work for some reason or another. By the end of the book, however, they find a place and have a great party! Everyone lives in my world of Hungle Bungle Jungle.
The story is adorable, Deb. I had fun reading and reviewing it. Little kids will love it. I love Hungle Bungle Jungle. Saying that always makes me smile.

How did you get the idea for this picture book?
This is going to sound silly but to be honest, I’m not sure. As I said before, the idea popped into my head when I was in elementary school. It could be that I wanted to write a story that I would like to read. Also, I remember telling my siblings and the neighbor kids stories on our front porch in the evenings. I don’t know but the idea could’ve developed from there. I do know that I didn’t write it down until I was taking a course from the Institute of Children’s Literature in the 1990s. In fact, I used it for a lesson. That, as well as my critique group helped me immensely with the story. Until then, it was just forming and transforming in my head! I remember the original premise: The animals of Hungle Bungle Jungle wanted to have a birthday party for King Lion. King Lion is kidnapped by a band of evil monkeys. The King even had his security people or animals! They went out hunting for clues so they could rescue King Lion. This is a far cry from what ‘Where Can We Have The Party’ is today!
All the animals are so cute and they try to help solve the problem of where to have the party.
Who is your illustrator and how did you find her?
My illustrator is Emily Dimov-Gottshall who is always attending classes at Penn State University to improve her craft. I met her years ago at church. Then, I had no idea that she was an artist until I was telling her that I was trying to find an illustrator for “Where Can We Have The Party?” You can find her at: https://www.facebook.com/gottheart/?hc_ref=SEARCH&fref=nf
She did a great job with the illustrations for your book. They're delightful.

Are you working on any other stories?
Currently, I’m working on a young adult book about two girls in the War of 1812. I find this story very interesting! I also am working on a picture book about chimpanzees. Of course, I have more Hungle Bungle Jungle books in the works. I’m also working on a story about Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis.
My goodness, you're a busy lady with so many projects and books coming along. Congratulations.

Have you always wanted to be an author?
Oh, yes. In fact, we can trace that back to my elementary school days, too. I remember going to my local branch of Carnegie Library and asking the librarian about books that would tell me how to get started. I was so nervous! I waited until no-one else was at her desk. When I asked her, she took me into the adults section of the library to find those books. I felt so special! Back then, kids weren’t allowed in the adult section and I was still in elementary school!
That was nice of the librarian to help you get an early start on your career.
How often do you write?
Unfortunately, I can only write part-time but I do write six days a week. I wish I could devote a full day to writing.
Well, you're doing a great job so far. Keep up the good work.

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
This is going to sound so cliché but it’s true: never give up. Always continue your writing education since writing for children is constantly changing. For instance, I belong to the CBI Clubhouse http://www.cbiclubhouse.com which is an ongoing and constantly changing, with children’s tastes and needs, online workshop. I also belong to several writing for children Facebook groups. Another bit of advice is to join a critique group. These are invaluable! It might take joining two or three to find the one that’s a good fit for you.
Best of luck with your book and all of your future ventures, Deb. Thanks for spending time with me today. It was fun chatting with you and finding out about your book and future plans."
