An interview with Wilbur the Tractor

"Have you met Wilbur? He's a cute, friendly tractor whose stories help children learn about lasting friendships and coping with changes in their lives. Wilbur loves making new friends and today he's stopping by for an interview with me."

"Wilbur, welcome to my blog."

"Thank you Deanie. I'm so excited to be spending time with you today."

" I can see how happy you are Wilbur, because your bouncing on all four tires."

"Yes, that's one of my favorite things to do when I'm happy."

"Wilbur, tell our readers how you gave me the idea for your story."

"When I came to your house, you thought I was so cute that I'd be the perfect character for another children's book so you talked to your sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, about illustrating the book for you."

"Thats right, Wilbur. Tell our readers more about your first book."

"Jim McNab is my best friend. He bought me a few  years ago and he takes good care of me. I have my own tool box with my name on it and even a green blanket that says 'Wilbur' on it. And Jim always washed my tires if they were muddy. And he had an Irish accent. He'd come into my barn every morning and say, 'Top o' the mornin' to you, Wilbur. ' But one day Jim didn't smile and say 'Top o'the mornin' to you, Wilbur.' He looked sad. Then he told me he'd have to sell me because I was getting o-l-d-e-r, Wilbur whispered. Big tears splashed from my headlights, thinking about being without my best friend. But Jim reminded me I might make new friends in my new home. He knew I love animals and he told me I might make new animal friends.'

"Jim is wise. I bet that helped you feel much better, Wilbur."

"Yes, it did. And Jim said he'd come to visit me in my new home. My book, A Tractor Named Wilbur" shows children that friendships can last a long time."

"That's a good thing for children to learn, Wilbur."

Tell us about your second bookWilbur's New Home.

"In Wilbur's New Home, Jim puts me up for sale. People come to see me and Jim tells me it will be fun, but most of the visitors are grumpy and unkind. I would've hated being with them. But in the end, I  found the perfect family. And at the end  there's a special surprise for me."

"That sounds like the perfect story for someone who is moving or changing schools."

Yes, it is. And I love making friends. Readers will meet some of my favorite friends in my books. One is Hattie the chicken. Guess what? She loves wearing pretty bonnets. And she specializes in planning parties. She's terrific at that. My readers love her.

Now you know more about my stories. Here are links where you can purchase them or find out more about them.

An Interview with Jim and Wilbur the Tractor

"Top o' the mornin' to you, Wilbur," said Jim, entering Wilbur's garage.  Today we're going to talk about your books."

"Hooray," said the little red tractor, bouncing all four tires. "

"I've owned you for more than five years. Tell everyone about your favorite jobs.

"Oh, most of all, I love helping you Jim. You're my best friend. But some of my favorite jobs are helping you mow the grass in the spring and summer. But that doesn't mean I rest all winter. Pushing the snow into neat little piles is so much fun. Sometimes I even pull the little cart so you can take weeds out of the garden."

"That's right, Wilbur. You do all of those jobs so well. We make a good team."

"What else happens in your first book, Wilbur?"

"I feel sad when you tell me you need a new tractor because it would be too hard for me to mow the big field where your new vegetable garden is. I thought I'd never see you again. Big tears rolled down my headlights. But you showed me there can be good things about changes. I might even make new animal friends. It was a great thing to know and I found out we will always be friends."

"That's right, Wilbur."

What happens in your second book, Wilbur's new Home?

"Different people come to see me. Some of them were grumpy and unkind, but you told me we'd find the perfect new family for me. One of the people I was too old. I ran and hid from him. Another man said he didn't like red tractors because they had bad tempers. That made me sad, but you and Hattie the Chicken told me I had to be patient and the right person would come. Our story has a happy ending."

"Yes, it does. We are both happy you found the perfect new family. And they even prepared a special surprise for you in your new home."

"Finally, could you tell everyone about the dedication of your books?"

Sure, Jim. My first book, A Tractor Named Wilbur, is dedicated to  all of the children who read my book. And the second book, Wilbur's new Home is dedicated to all of the children who are shy about making new friends. I love making new friends and I hope all of the children enjoy my books."

"Thank you for telling everyone about your new stories, Wilbur. I loved our interview. I'll see you soon."

A Tractor Named Wilbur featured on Reader's Magnet!

I appreciate the opportunity to discuss my first picture book, A Tractor Named Wilbur- Friendships Last Forever today. It is the winner of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Gold Medal.  Thank you, Author’s Lounge, for the invitation to introduce Wilbur’s story to your audience.

Wilbur is a cheerful little red tractor who loved helping his friend Jim. Wilbur has known Jim for five years. In the morning, Jim would typically open the barn door and say, “Top o’ the mornin’ to you, Wilbur.” In the summer Wilbur loved mowing the grass for Jim. He cut every blade of grass perfectly. Jim appreciated Wilbur’s efforts. He proved that by taking very good care of him. For example, when Wilbur’s tires were muddy, Jim hosed them off and dried them with a towel. Jim had a tool box with Wilbur’s name on it. He even covered Wilbur with a fluffy green blanket when the weather was chilly.

Although Wilbur loved cutting the grass for Jim, he wanted more things to do. Wilbur asked Jim if there were other tasks he could learn. The little red tractor was thrilled to wear chains on his tires in the winter to help keep him from slipping while he pushed the snow into neat piles. Before long, Wilbur pulled a small cart so Jim could carry gardening tools and weeds from the flower beds. He loved his life with Jim, but things were about to change.

One morning Jim opened the barn door. He didn’t say, “Top o’ the mornin’ to you Wilbur.” Of course, Wilbur noticed something was bothering Jim. He said, “Jim, you look sad. What’s wrong?”

Jim explained he wanted to buy the lot across the street so he could have his own vegetable garden. Wilbur answered, “That’s exciting. Why are you sad?”

Jim whispered, “Wilbur, you’re getting o-l-d-e-r.” He told his little tractor that he would feel very sad if Wilbur got hurt while mowing that big field. Jim felt he needed a new tractor.

When he heard the news, Wilbur’s body shook and tears cascaded down his headlights. Wilbur stomped his tires, insisting he didn’t want to leave.

The next day, Jim came into the barn to visit Wilbur. He washed Wilbur’s headlights with warm soapy water. He patted the little tractor and reassured him that he would find a new home for Wilbur with someone who loved him.

And...there is a little quiz at book's end to underline new knowledge.Recommended. ~ 5-star review by Grady Harp
"An awesome book cover, great hand-drawn colored pictures & proper font & writing style. A very professionally written children's (elementary age) tractor storybook. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters, settings, etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great children's tractor fun movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is an extremely easy rating of 5 stars." ~Tony Parsons

"A Tractor Named Wilbur" is a heartwarming story about Wilbur the tractor and his owner, Jim. They speak to one another and Jim takes very good care of Wilbur. Wilbur loves helping and wants more jobs to do, so Jim gives him another job of pulling a cart. Then in the winter Wilbur plows the snow. The picture of Wilbur with the plow on the front is adorable. Wilbur has a cute smile.
As Wilbur ages, however, Jim is concerned. Wilbur will not be able to handle a larger job that he needs done, so he must take Wilbur to a new home where he will have less work to do and still be useful despite his age. At first Wilbur is very sad and does not want to go away from Jim and his nice, warm barn. The picture of Wilbur crying is so sad! Jim promises to give Wilbur to someone who will take very good care of him. Jim reassures Wilbur of a bright future. Wilbur will be able to make new friends and have a lot of fun in his new home. Jim promises to stay in touch and remain friends. That way Wilber will have a lot of new stories to tell Jim.
This is a very sweet story and would be perfect to tell to children who have to move or who have moved. It would also be a great story to read to kids if there is an older piece of equipment, car, truck, etc. that needs to be sold. This book would have helped me when I was little because when my parents sold our blue car, I cried my eyes out. If Wilbur was there to show me that the car was going onto new, fun adventures, I might not have been so sad.
This book would be a cute story for kids around ages 4-8. The story is a little on the long side, so younger children might not get as much out of the story as older children would.
